General Guidelines

Overview

One of the main goals at CAPA is to develop a sense of discipline and pride in our students. For this reason, all students are expected to maintain a neat appearance and to abide by the specified dress code for their level and/or class. Each dress code is designed to suit the style of dance or discipline being learned. All Pre-Academy, Academy and Intensive Academy ballet students must wear the appropriate color of leotard according to the CAPA dress code for each of their ballet classes. This not only creates a disciplined learning environment free from distractions but also provides students with a strong sense of pride and accomplishment as they progress through each level of classical ballet. Students have tangible evidence of their achievement.

Proper Care of Dance Shoes

Please note that all dance shoes, whether ballet slippers, jazz shoes or hip-hop sneakers, should never be worn outside the buildings as dirt can become embedded in the soles and damage the dance floors.

All ballet slippers should fit snugly, the drawstrings tied in a knot, the excess cut off, and then tucked in. Elastics must be properly sewn in. Elastics that have been tied under the foot are unacceptable. This can cut off the circulation of blood as well as causing the line of the foot to become distorted.

A ballet slipper that fits correctly is essential to the proper development of the foot. Therefore, buying ballet slippers, or any dance shoes that are a little too big to allow for growth, is not beneficial. If you are unsure about the fit, your child’s teacher will be glad to guide you in process.

Hair

For all dance classes, hair must be pulled back off the face and securely fastened as specified for each class. It is advisable to keep a supply of extra bobby pins, bun accessories and hair spray in student’s dance bag at all times.
